When Life Gives You Lemons …

ImageI recently received a forwarded email from my mother, about the use and wonders of lemons and lemon peel.

The email has been reported previously (www.snopes.com/medical/disease/lemons.asp), and what follows is my response, re-sent to all those on the circulation list.

This email seems at best, dubious.

Well, you see lemon peels contain as much as 5 to 10 times more vitamins than the lemon juice itself.

An example of the baloney from the site includes the following:

The PYRO-ENERGEN is thought to be a medical machine by medical authorities, but it is not! In fact, the PYRO-ENERGEN is simply an eradicator of the paranormal wave or dark matter/energy, which is the cause of world’s maladies. We are not making up words or talking gibberish here, and the existence of dark matter and dark energy are in fact recognized by the scientific community!

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE PARANORMAL WAVE! Also, they are making up words and talking gibberish to an extent, though both dark energy and dark matter do have specific meaning in proper science.

They also state that:

Eradicates the Cause of Viral Diseases, Cancer, and Other Diseases of Unknown Cause
Achieves Fast Treatment Result
No Side Effects
Proven Effective – Not a Placebo Effect

This is not only nonsense for the most part, but DANGEROUS nonsense – I would like to see proper scientific trials to back up their claims. There is no way an electrostatic charge can eradicate the causes of viral diseases and cancer – there are strict laws about claims to cure cancer and this is treading a fine line.

Lemon (Citrus) is a miraculous product to kill cancer cells. It is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy. Why do we not know about that? Because there are laboratories interested in making a synthetic version that will bring them huge profits.

Again, more dangerous nonsense and exaggerated claims: See http://www.hoax-slayer.com/lemon-cancer-cells.shtml

The argument that somehow there is a plot to keep this secret is an old ruse used by purveyors of this sort of woo (as used to justify other non-proven treatments such as homeopathy, Reikei, crystal and aroma therapies, etc.). If it was effective as claimed, it would be adopted!

.. It is credited with many virtues, but the most interesting is the effect it produces on cysts and tumours.

This plant is a proven remedy against cancers of all types. Some say it is very useful in all variants of cancer. It is considered also as an anti microbial spectrum against bacterial infections and fungi, effective against internal parasites and worms, it regulates blood pressure which is too high and an antidepressant, combats stress and nervous disorders.

The source of this information is fascinating: it comes from one of the largest drug manufacturers in the world, says that after more than 20 laboratory tests since 1970, the extracts revealed that It destroys the malignant cells in 12 cancers, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreas..

The compounds of this tree showed 10,000 times better than the product Adriamycin, a drug normally used chemotherapeutic in the world, slowing the growth of cancer cells. And what is even more astonishing: this type of therapy with lemon extract only destroys malignant cancer cells and it does not affect healthy cells.

Whereas there are some elements of truth here, it again over-states the whole thing.

This email has been previously documented before (http://www.snopes.com/medical/disease/lemons.asp), which is woth a closer read. In fact, http://www.snopes.com is worth checking when you read or hear any such unusual claims in the future.

Unfortunately, this sort of email is all too common, often forwarded with best of intentions, but without careful thought. The old rule about if something appears to be too good, it usually is, is worth applying.

I suggest reading such books as ‘The Demon Haunted World’ by Carl Sagan and ‘Bad Science’ by Ben Goldacre to gain a better insight into this sort of thing in the future.
